Lagging behind in Maths – says NCERT

The National Achievement Survey of NCERT — conducted across six districts, 230 schools and among 4,272 students in Delhi — revealed that Delhi students performed lower than the national average in most mathematical abilities, except for patterns and multiplication. Delhi students are at a score of 244 while the average national score is 252. In fact, among the 34 states and union territories surveyed, Delhi is among the lowest eight performers in language and lowest six in mathematics.

Astonishingly, Delhi boys gave girls a close contest with comparable scores in Maths performance and for rural and urban students, the difference is very slim. But interestingly, none of the groups could surpass national average.

Survey suggests that prime topics which students at elementary level dread the most are addition, subtraction, division, place value, measurement, geometry, money and data handling.

While at national level, average students scoring above 75% in the assessment is 39.2%, Delhi students lags behind at 33.9%. At the same time, the percentage of Delhi students who scored between 0- 35% is significantly higher (12.2%) than the national average of 8.7%.

Looking at these stats, we need to definitely take a step back and understand where schools are still lacking despite of world class technologies being used and help kids in best possible manner to ensure that a solid foundation for future is laid today

Silly mistakes that you can avoid in your exams

Many a times you would’ve come back and realized that you have made some silly mistakes. These silly mistakes would have cost you a good number of marks which would have improved your percentage and your rank. So, why do we make these silly mistakes and how do we avoid them ?

Here are the tips that can help you avoid them. Believe me, they work wonders.

1. Detailed reading

Most of the times we don’t read the question properly in exams. Ensure that you read each and every line very well. Just because time is running fast and you believe that you may run short of time, reading a question is the most important aspect. Most of the teachers try to take advantage of such habits and play around with questions with little twists.

2. Check the numbers and calculations

Most of the times, we don’t check all the numbers properly. Either we confuse between addition or subtraction signs or get the numbers or the calculations wrong. Do check each and every number and calculation properly. I suggest that you keep atleast 15 mins separately especially in a maths exam for revision.

3. Simplify questions and problems

Because the calculations or questions can become lengthy at times, we get confused. Simplify each problem and go step-by-step. It is important that you follow this approach especially in solving complex problems in exams. It pays a ton if you do so instead of speeding up and getting things incorrect. Also, keep all the maths formulas in check and ensure that you have used the formulas correctly.

Follow these simple tips and you will surely benefit by avoiding some of the silly mistakes in your exams. Its coming from a personal experience. We wish the best of you so that you prepare better for your exams and benefit from our simple tips. Do write to us in case of suggestions.
